Instagram username
generator and checker.

Instagram only accepts letters, numbers, periods and underscores, caps you at 30 characters, and refuses a period on either end or two in a row. This tool builds handle ideas that already obey all of it — and checks the one you had in mind.

Instagram username generator

Every idea below is checked against Instagram's own rules before it is shown: 30 characters, letters, numbers, periods and underscores, no leading or trailing period, never two periods in a row.

Handle shape

ava.rose — the period is Instagram's default separator. It cannot start or end the handle.

Legal on Instagram is not the same as free on Instagram. Nothing here has been checked against the platform, so open Instagram and try the ones you like before you commit to any of them.

Instagram username checker

Already have one in mind? Paste it here and see which of Instagram's rules it breaks. This checks the format only — it cannot tell you whether the handle is taken.

Type a handle above to check it against Instagram's format rules.

The format

Four rules.
No exceptions.

These are not style guidelines. Break one and the save button simply refuses, usually with an error that does not say which rule you broke.

  • Rule 01

    Thirty characters, hard stop

Instagram will not save a username longer than 30 characters. The generator treats that as a ceiling rather than a target — the length control lets you cut it to 20 or 15, which is where handles stop getting truncated in tags and previews.

  • Rule 02

    Four kinds of character

Letters, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces, no hyphens, no accents, no emoji. Anything you type into the checker outside that set is flagged, and nothing outside it is ever generated.

  • Rule 03

Periods cannot sit on the ends

A username that starts or ends with a period is rejected. Underscores are the exception to this — Instagram is happy for one to lead or trail, which is exactly why the wrapped shape exists.

  • Rule 04

Never two periods in a row

Consecutive periods are not allowed, which is the rule people hit when they join three words. If you need two separators in one handle, one of them has to be an underscore.

One more thing the rules do not tell you: capitals are decorative. Instagram treats usernames as case-insensitive, so AvaRose and avarose are the same handle and only one of them is easy to read in a tag. Everything this tool produces is lowercase. If you want the same handle on TikTok, X and YouTube as well, their character sets differ — the general username generator has the cross-platform table.

The unwritten half

Legal is easy.
Convincing isn't.

Instagram will accept x7g.pp2_4 without complaint. Nobody will follow it. These six conventions are what separate a valid handle from one that reads like a creator account.

  • 01

    One period, placed once

The single period between a name and a category word is the most recognisable shape on Instagram. It reads as deliberate, it survives being said out loud, and it frees a name the joined version lost years ago.

  • 02

A tail that says what this is

co, studio, daily, edits, diary, club. The tail does the job of a bio before anyone opens the profile, and it stays true when the content evolves in a way that a product name would not.

  • 03

    Lowercase, always

Instagram treats usernames as case-insensitive, so capitals buy you nothing and cost you clarity. Every handle this tool produces is lowercase for that reason.

  • 04

    Doubled letters over misspellings

Turning ava into avaa frees the handle without changing how it sounds. Turning it into avah changes the spelling people will type when they half-remember you, and sends them somewhere else.

  • 05

    Underscore wraps read dated

Instagram allows an underscore at the start and the end, and _name_ is the oldest workaround on the platform. It still works. It also announces that the plain version was taken.

  • 06

    Short enough to be tagged

Thirty characters is the ceiling, not the target. A handle gets typed into a story tag with one thumb; anything past about eighteen characters is a handle people paste rather than type.

Username vs. name

Two fields.
Two different jobs.

Most of the pressure people put on their username belongs on the name field instead. One is an address; the other is a description, and only one of them is expensive to change.

When it's gone

Someone already
has your name.

Instagram is old enough that every plain first name went years ago, and no tool changes that. What you can change is the shape. Add a category tail so the handle describes the account. Move your name to the second half, where far fewer people have looked. Double a letter, which frees the string without touching how it sounds. Switch a period for an underscore, or the reverse — Instagram treats them as different handles even when they read identically.

What is not worth doing: adding a birth year, stacking underscores until something sticks, or misspelling your own name. The first two make the handle hard to dictate, and the third quietly sends every half-remembered search to somebody else's profile. Generate a shortlist, take five to Instagram, and claim whichever one is still there.

If the account is an AI influencer rather than a person, the name is doing even more work, because there is no surname to fall back on and no history to explain it. Pick the handle in the same sitting as the face: the AI influencer generator covers buying a trained model or bringing your own, AI influencers on Instagram covers what running that account actually involves, and the creation tools page is the rest of the workspace.

FAQ

Instagram
specifics.

Can this tool tell me if an Instagram username is available?

No. Everything on this page runs inside your browser and nothing contacts Instagram, so no result here says anything about whether a handle is free. What the tool guarantees is the other half: every suggestion is a format Instagram will accept. Take the ones you like to Instagram's sign-up or edit-profile screen to find out the rest.

What characters can an Instagram username contain?

Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, and nothing else — no spaces, hyphens, accented letters or emoji. It can be up to 30 characters, it cannot start or end with a period, and it cannot contain two periods in a row. Emoji and spaces belong in your name field, which is a separate thing.

Is a period or an underscore better in an Instagram username?

A period reads cleaner and is the more common choice on Instagram, but it comes with placement rules. An underscore has none — it can sit anywhere, including first and last — and it survives on platforms that reject periods entirely. If you want one handle everywhere, the underscore travels further.

What should I do when the username I want is taken?

Keep the spelling and change the shape. Add a category tail, move your name to the second half, or double a letter — avaa reads the same out loud as ava. Deliberately misspelling your own name frees the handle and costs you every person who types the spelling they already know.

Does my Instagram username affect whether people find me?

It helps, but the name field above it does more of that work. Instagram matches searches against both, and the name field takes spaces, capitals and keywords the username cannot. Put the plain, sayable version in the handle and the descriptive words in the name.

Can I use this for an AI influencer account?

Yes, and the constraints are identical — Instagram does not apply a different character set to an AI-run account. What changes is the disclosure: label AI-generated content when you post it, and pick the handle at the same time you choose or upload the face rather than after the first upload.

Handle sorted. Now the feed.

Pick a trained model or upload your own, then post to Instagram under the handle you just claimed. Your AI influencer is included in every plan.
